ATHENS — From September 27 to October 4, 2023, the historic city of Athens played host to the Par-Olympia event, welcoming a vibrant international community dedicated to promoting diversity and social inclusion through athletics. Among the participants was a proud delegation from Bulgaria representing the #SMILE team, bringing together passionate athletes and future sports professionals for a week of competition, learning, and cultural exchange under the shared values of the Olympic and Paralympic movements.

The Bulgarian contingent featured six dedicated athletes with intellectual disabilities. Accompanying them were university students specializing in Adapted Physical Activity and Sports from the National Sports Academy "Vasil Levski." This specialized academic discipline is rapidly growing in popularity and appeal, offering vital career prospects and professional development opportunities for young people committed to making a difference in modern athletics.

The Par-Olympia event is a comprehensive recreational and informative sports initiative designed to foster a diverse and inclusive society through physical activity. The program receives vital support from the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, which champions educational mobility, cooperation, and social cohesion across member states. By bringing together youths both with and without disabilities from all corners of Europe, the initiative provides a unique platform for participants to connect with international peers, embrace the Olympic and Paralympic spirit, and celebrate shared human potential.

Throughout the week-long gathering in the Greek capital, participants had the opportunity to develop and refine their physical, behavioral, and mental skills. By challenging themselves and one another through a wide array of physical activities, movement exercises, games, and structured sports, the youths learned valuable lessons about resilience and personal growth. Furthermore, the environment encouraged them to navigate and appreciate a multicultural world, fostering a deep sense of acceptance and respect for human diversity while practicing peaceful personal behavior.

The scale of the Athens gathering underscored the widespread European commitment to inclusive sports initiatives. The event brought together approximately 250 participants, including 100 youths with disabilities, traveling from 12 different European countries. Operating in parallel with the youth activities, the program also engaged key agents of change—such as coaches, volunteers, and event facilitators—through targeted seminars and satellite activities. These specialized sessions were designed to enhance their professional capabilities regarding inclusion, ensuring that sport remains accessible and welcoming to all.

Organizers emphasized that inclusion in and through sport relies upon granting every individual full respect, dignity, value, and a true sense of belonging. Whether participating as an athlete, coach, official, administrator, or spectator, every role is integral to creating a balanced and equitable sporting culture.

The overarching objective of the Par-Olympia Sport Event is to educate, engage, and inspire young people living with disabilities to actively participate in sports, acquire essential life skills, and adopt core Olympic and Paralympic values. In doing so, the initiative seeks to facilitate their meaningful social inclusion through sport, particularly as communities continue to navigate the challenges of the post-Covid era.

To powerfully symbolize and highlight these core objectives, organizers deliberately selected the historic sport venues of the Athens 2004 Olympic and Paralympic Games for the hosting of the events. Utilizing these iconic locations established a direct, tangible link with the enduring Olympic spirit, reminding all participants of the historic milestones achieved in the very same city nearly two decades prior.

For the members of the Bulgarian delegation, the journey to Athens represented far more than a sports competition. It served as a transformative international platform where athletes could proudly demonstrate their abilities, while future sports professionals gained firsthand experience in adapted physical education. As the event concluded on October 4, participants returned home carrying the lessons, friendships, and shared ideals forged beneath the Athenian sun, marking another significant step forward for the #SMILE team and the broader European movement toward a fully inclusive sporting society.
