Celebrating Inclusion and Ability: Plovdiv Hosts the 7th Annual “Happy Hand in Hand” Festival

On October 7, 2023, the scenic Rowing Base in Plovdiv became a vibrant hub of energy, athleticism, and community spirit as it played host to the seventh annual “Happy Hand in Hand” festival. The event brought together individuals with disabilities, their families, caregivers, and a broad network of community members and advocates eager to support and celebrate the talents of people with special needs. Among the notable participants was a team representing the #SMILE project, who took full advantage of the inclusive environment to showcase their athletic skills, physical abilities, and unwavering enthusiasm.

Organized by the “Parallel World” association—an organization dedicated to supporting children with special needs and advocating for their seamless integration into broader society—the festival has grown over seven consecutive years into a cherished local tradition. This year’s edition once again demonstrated the profound power of sports and recreational activities as universal bridges, bringing diverse groups of people together on equal footing.

The festival grounds buzzed with activity from early in the morning, offering a wide array of sporting disciplines designed to accommodate various interests and physical abilities. Participants had the opportunity to engage in everything from pickleball, volleyball, field hockey, badminton, capoeira, and boxing to basketball, high-energy Zumba sessions, and wall climbing. Each station was supervised and supported by volunteers and coordinators who ensured that every attendee, regardless of their athletic background or physical limitations, could participate safely and joyfully.

Beyond the competitive and recreational sports arenas, the festival expanded its offerings to include creative and cultural engagement. In the bio garden situated next to the local Youth Center, festival-goers found a peaceful yet stimulating space to express their creativity. Here, guests could design and craft their own custom badges or explore a curated selection of pictures celebrating rich Bulgarian traditions and heritage, blending physical activity with cultural appreciation.

Tina Dimitrova, a primary organizer of the event and a former professional basketball player, was central to the day’s activities. Throughout the festival, Dimitrova offered visible, vocal support for individuals with special needs, championing their fundamental desire to be fully accepted, understood, and embraced by society. Her background in professional sports heavily influenced her perspective on the day’s events, emphasizing teamwork, dedication, and mutual respect over categorization or division.

Speaking passionately about the core mission of the “Parallel World” association, Dimitrova addressed attendees, volunteers, and supporters regarding societal attitudes toward individuals with disabilities. She strongly urged the public to shift away from traditional responses of charity or sympathy, explicitly stating that pity is the absolute last thing children and adults with special needs require or desire. Instead, she called on the community to practice genuine acceptance, inclusion, and warmth, embracing these individuals as equal and valuable members of the social fabric.

The participation of the #SMILE team added a dynamic competitive edge to the day, as athletes demonstrated remarkable coordination, determination, and sportsmanship across the various discipline stations. Their presence underscored the primary objective of inclusive sports initiatives: ensuring that athletic spaces are accessible to everyone and that physical prowess and enjoyment are celebrated without barriers.

As the seventh annual “Happy Hand in Hand” festival concluded at the Plovdiv Rowing Base, it left a lasting impression on participants, families, and organizers alike. By combining a diverse sports program with creative cultural workshops and powerful advocacy from prominent figures like Tina Dimitrova, the event successfully reinforced the message that true social integration is built through shared experiences, mutual respect, and the elimination of preconceived limitations.
