Developmental Pathways (DP) is proud to announce the presentation of its prestigious Board of Directors Lifetime Achievement Award to Dr. Michaela McDonnell, a dedicated and departing member of the board. This high honor is reserved for individuals whose lifelong commitment has meaningfully supported people with disabilities, both through the vital work of Developmental Pathways and within the wider Colorado community. Dr. McDonnell’s departure marks the conclusion of a remarkable chapter of governance, advocacy, and hands-on leadership that has left an indelible mark on the organization and the families it serves.
Throughout her tenure, Dr. McDonnell demonstrated an extraordinary level of dedication, serving three full terms on the Developmental Pathways Board of Directors from 2016 to 2025. Over the course of these nine years, she took on critical leadership responsibilities, guiding the organization through important institutional milestones and strategic financial decisions. Her service included terms as Board President and Vice President, positions that required a deep understanding of organizational governance, strategic planning, and the complex landscape of community-based services for individuals with developmental disabilities and delays. In addition to her executive leadership roles, she contributed her time and expertise as an active member of the board’s Mill Levy and Finance Committees, ensuring that resources were effectively managed and allocated to maximize support for the community.
Dr. McDonnell’s involvement with Developmental Pathways extended far beyond the boardroom. Throughout her nine years of service, she was known as a deeply passionate advocate for individuals and families, consistently showing unwavering support for DP’s staff teams. Rather than limiting her role to governance from a distance, she chose to immerse herself in the daily life of the organization. She regularly attended agency events, offered continuous encouragement to staff members, and served as a powerful public voice for the mission, including delivering a memorable and inspiring speech at Developmental Pathways’ 60th Anniversary Celebration. Her ability to connect personally with staff, volunteers, and families helped foster a culture of community and mutual respect within the organization.
The roots of Dr. McDonnell’s commitment to Colorado and its residents run deep. A resident of the state for nearly 40 years, she built both her personal life and her professional career within the local community. Professionally, she is a recently retired Board-Certified Dermatologist who operated a successful private practice in Lakewood, Colorado, since 1988. Balancing a demanding medical career with rigorous civic and nonprofit leadership is no small feat, yet Dr. McDonnell managed both with exceptional grace and dedication. Over decades of medical practice, she not only cared for the physical health of countless patients but also maintained an active and respected presence in numerous professional organizations. Her professional memberships included the American Academy of Dermatology and the Colorado Dermatologic Society, where her peers recognized her leadership by electing her to serve as President.
Beyond her professional achievements and her extensive nonprofit governance work, Dr. McDonnell brings a deeply personal perspective to her advocacy. She is the proud parent of six children, a role that has given her firsthand insight into the joys, challenges, and unique needs of raising a family. Importantly, one of her children receives support from Developmental Pathways, granting her a dual perspective as both a dedicated community advocate and a family member navigating the system of services. This lived experience infused her contributions on the board with authenticity, empathy, and an acute understanding of the real-world impact of DP’s programs.
The leadership of Developmental Pathways gathered to celebrate Dr. McDonnell’s extraordinary service, expressing profound gratitude for her years of dedication and lifelong commitment to supporting people with disabilities. Her impact on the organization is viewed not only through the policies she helped shape and the financial oversight she provided, but also through the personal connections she forged and the inspirational standard she set for future board members.
Reflecting on her tenure and the significance of her contributions, Matt VanAuken, Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director of Developmental Pathways, shared high praise for the departing board leader.
"Dr. McDonnell’s leadership and commitment to our board and community have served as an inspiration to myself and many others," said Matt VanAuken. "As both a parent and a champion for our community, she has brought unique insight, thoughtful guidance, and invaluable support throughout her nine years of service. Her impact will be felt for years to come."
The sentiments expressed by executive leadership are echoed throughout the entire Developmental Pathways community, where staff members, fellow board members, and families recognize the profound difference Dr. McDonnell has made. Her ability to blend rigorous professional acumen with deep personal compassion has helped guide the organization through times of growth and challenge alike, ensuring that individuals with developmental disabilities and delays continue to receive the high-quality support and advocacy they deserve.
As Dr. McDonnell transitions away from the board and steps into her next chapter following her recent retirement from medical practice, the organization takes time to reflect on the lasting legacy she leaves behind. Developmental Pathways extends its deepest appreciation to Dr. McDonnell for her remarkable contributions, her steady leadership, and her unwavering advocacy, wishing her the very best in all her future endeavors.
