Between June 12 and June 20, 2022, the scenic coastal town of Nessebar played host to a transformative gathering dedicated to breaking down barriers in athletics. The VUSB Nessebar venue became the center for an adapted water sports camp tailored specifically for young people with intellectual disabilities. Led by expert lecturers representing the four distinct sectors of the Water Sports Department at the National Sports Academy (NSA) "Vasil Levski," the initiative offered participants a unique opportunity to engage with recreational and competitive water activities in a safe, supportive, and professional environment.

The primary mission of the sports camp extended far beyond simple recreation. It served as a dynamic platform to promote the ongoing activities of the NSA in the specialized field of adapted water sports, catering to individuals with diverse disabilities and distinct special needs. Over the course of the week-long program, participants dove into a variety of aquatic disciplines, gaining hands-on experience and building confidence on the open water. The core sports featured during the camp included sailing, kayaking, and swimming, each carefully adapted to ensure that every young person could participate fully, safely, and joyfully.

Beyond the physical benefits of aquatic training, all participants were immersed in the broader ethos of the Sport, Motivation, Inclusion, Leadership, and Engagement initiative, widely recognized as the #SMILE project. This forward-thinking European project is designed to examine and strengthen the profound connection between sport and social inclusion in an innovative, unconventional manner. By guaranteeing international participation in structured sporting activities for individuals grappling with intellectual disabilities and mental health challenges, #SMILE aims to reshape how society perceives athletic capability and community integration.

The #SMILE proposal actively contributes to advancing the integration of people with intellectual disabilities, reinforcing their fundamental perception that European Union rights belong just as much to them as to any other citizen. A prime example of this philosophy in action is the fundamental right of European citizens to move and reside freely across member states—a principle deeply reflected in the EU’s ongoing institutional commitment to ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy a genuine, unhindered right to freedom of movement on equal terms with others.

This noble vision was translated directly into practical reality through the subsequent international sporting event held under the #SMILE banner in April 2023. That landmark gathering was meticulously structured to provide participants with intellectual disabilities a tangible, lived sense of free movement and residence across borders, proving that inclusion is not merely a theoretical policy goal but a living, breathing reality that can be experienced through international cooperation and athletic exchange.

The #SMILE project aligns seamlessly with the horizontal objectives fiercely pursued by the Erasmus+ Programme, which has provided crucial co-funding for the present initiative. Erasmus+ consistently strives to guarantee inclusion and diversity across all conceivable fields of education, training, youth, and sports. The core concept behind the Nessebar camp and the broader #SMILE framework serves as a shining representation of what it truly means to integrate a historically marginalized and highly disadvantaged group into vibrant international activities.

Furthermore, the educational scope of the camp extended beyond the water’s edge. Throughout the duration of the program, participants and accompanying organizers alike familiarized themselves with advanced methodologies developed for the social and physical inclusion of disabled individuals in sporting environments. These methodologies were drawn from pioneering initiatives such as Train4Inclusive and SEEYou, known formally as the South-East European Youth Para-Sport Exchange. By integrating these diverse educational frameworks, the camp functioned not only as an athletic training ground but also as an invaluable knowledge-sharing hub for best practices in adapted sports pedagogy.

The success of the Nessebar camp underscores the vital importance of continued institutional dedication to adapted physical education. By bringing together dedicated academic professionals from the NSA "Vasil Levski," enthusiastic young participants, and forward-looking European frameworks, the initiative successfully demonstrated that the waters of the Black Sea can serve as a powerful equalizer. As programs like #SMILE, Train4Inclusive, and SEEYou continue to pave the way, the landscape of European sports grows increasingly accessible, ensuring that the transformative joy of sailing, kayaking, and swimming remains open to all.
