PLOVDIV — On October 7, 2023, the scenic Rowing Base in Plovdiv transformed into a vibrant hub of athleticism, community, and advocacy as it hosted the seventh annual “Happy Hand in Hand” festival. The event brought together individuals with disabilities, their families, and supporters dedicated to championing social integration and breaking down societal barriers.

At the heart of this year’s gathering was the #SMILE team, members of which seized the opportunity to take part in the festivities, showcasing their athletic skills, determination, and competitive spirit across a wide array of sporting disciplines. Organized for the seventh consecutive year by the “Parallel World” association—an organization steadfast in its mission to support and advocate for children with special needs and their integration into mainstream society—the festival has steadily grown into one of the region’s most anticipated inclusive community events.

The day’s itinerary offered something for every participant and visitor, reflecting a diverse spectrum of physical activities designed to accommodate various interests and abilities. Attendees engaged in a rich variety of sports, ranging from traditional team and individual pursuits like volleyball, basketball, badminton, and field hockey to more dynamic or unconventional options such as pickleball, boxing, capoeira, Zumba, and wall climbing. Instructors, volunteers, and participants mingled freely on the grounds of the Rowing Base, creating an atmosphere defined by mutual encouragement and shared joy.

Beyond the energetic athletic competitions, the festival grounds offered creative and cultural spaces for attendees to connect. Situated in the bio garden adjacent to the local Youth Center, guests had the opportunity to participate in hands-on craft activities. Visitors could design and create custom badges or select and appreciate pictures celebrating rich Bulgarian traditions, blending physical wellness with cultural heritage and artistic expression.

Among the prominent figures lending their voice and presence to the event was event organizer Tina Dimitrova, a former professional basketball player whose athletic background lent a powerful voice to the day’s proceedings. Dimitrova has long been a vocal advocate for individuals with special needs, consistently using her platform to campaign for their right to be fully accepted, valued, and embraced by mainstream society.

Welcoming attendees and speaking passionately about the core mission of the “Parallel World” association, Dimitrova issued a heartfelt call to action for the broader community. She urged citizens to open their hearts and embrace children and individuals with special needs as equal members of society, emphasizing that what they need most is genuine inclusion, respect, and friendship rather than misplaced charity. According to Dimitrova, pity is the absolute last thing these individuals require, as true progress lies in recognizing their immense potential, resilience, and humanity.

The collaboration between athletes, families, organizers, and community members at the Plovdiv Rowing Base underscored the ongoing strides being made toward a more inclusive society. Through events like the “Happy Hand in Hand” festival, organizations such as “Parallel World” and initiatives like #SMILE continue to pave the way for meaningful social change, ensuring that sport remains a universal language capable of uniting communities and empowering every individual, regardless of their physical abilities.
