PLOVDIV — On October 7, 2023, the scenic Rowing Base in Plovdiv came alive with energy, laughter, and a profound sense of community as it hosted the seventh annual “Happy Hand in Hand” festival. The event successfully gathered people with disabilities, their families, and countless community members who share a deep empathy for the challenges faced by individuals with special needs. Designed to break down barriers through movement and shared experiences, the festival offered a vibrant platform where participants of all abilities could connect, play, and celebrate together.
At the heart of this year’s gathering was the #SMILE team, members of which had the unique opportunity to step forward and showcase their athletic skills and physical abilities. Surrounded by supporters and fellow athletes, the team demonstrated that sports serve as a universal language capable of bridging divides and fostering genuine camaraderie.

The festival was organized by the “Parallel World” association, an organization that has dedicated itself for years to advocating for children and individuals with special needs, championing their integration into broader society. Marking its seventh consecutive year, the event has grown into a cornerstone fixture in Plovdiv, continually expanding its reach and deepening its impact within the community.
This year’s edition featured an exceptionally diverse array of sports activities tailored to accommodate various interests and physical capabilities. Attendees had the chance to try their hand at pickleball, volleyball, field hockey, badminton, capoeira, boxing, basketball, Zumba, and wall climbing. Each station was designed not merely for recreation, but to encourage participants to push their boundaries, discover new passions, and experience the pure joy of athletic achievement in an inclusive environment.

Beyond the energetic sports zones, the festival grounds offered creative spaces that celebrated culture and personal expression. Situated in the bio garden adjacent to the local Youth Center, guests were invited to engage in hands-on artistic activities. Visitors could design and create their own custom badges or browse through a curated selection of pictures highlighting rich Bulgarian traditions, blending contemporary community engagement with a deep appreciation for local heritage.
Tina Dimitrova, a prominent event organizer and former professional basketball player, played a central role in welcoming attendees and championing the core mission of the “Parallel World” association. Drawing from her extensive background in sports, Dimitrova has consistently lent her voice and platform to advocate for individuals with special needs and their fundamental desire to be fully accepted by society.

Reflecting on the philosophy behind the festival, Dimitrova issued a passionate call to action for the wider community. She urged people to genuinely embrace children and individuals with special needs rather than offering them pity. According to Dimitrova, pity is the last thing these individuals need or want; instead, they seek authentic connection, equal opportunities, respect, and a society that recognizes their inherent potential and worth.
Her message resonated deeply with the families, volunteers, and onlookers gathered at the Rowing Base. Throughout the day, the atmosphere was defined by mutual respect, shared enthusiasm, and a collective commitment to building a more inclusive society. As the various sports matches concluded and the craft stations wrapped up, participants and organizers alike reflected on another successful year of the “Happy Hand in Hand” festival, leaving the Plovdiv Rowing Base inspired and united in their vision for a more accepting future.
